To anyone currently using Partha's 2.7.4 Windows 64-bit build, are you experiencing issues with image tearing? What I mean by that is that when moving an image quickly, it seems to split into columns and rows and then go back together when it's stopped moving. I don't believe that ever happened with normal GIMP. Is that just because this version is an unofficial one? Or is it something with the settings or just the fact that it's 64-bit?

I use Partha's 2.7.4 and I haven't had that problem with it. Is this a one time thing or does it happen all the time.
Try rebooting to see if it still happens.

I wonder if it's related to having a lot of layers? The total image probably has 10+ layers. I know that GIMP tends to slow down when there's a lot of layers in an image. I did reboot and it did the some thing. It doesn't do it if I move the image around slow, but I try to do a quick grab and move, then it will tear like that.

Partha may be able to help you with this problem. He has a website. http://partha.com/

I'm thrilled to have access to the latest stable G'MIC, but for some reason, it seems to work when I open Gimp 2.7, but not 2.7.4. Also, is it something unique to the 2.7 series that one must export rather than save_as to save as anything other than .xcf format?

2.7 and 2.7.4 would be two separate Gimp versions. You would probably need to add your GMIC to the version you are having the problems with. I have 2.6.11, 2.7.4 in my hard drive and I have another version in my usb flash drive. That means I have to insert GMIC independently in all three unless it comes pre-installed in that version.

It is. I believe that was done in order to make it clear between saving in .xcf format and saving in formats other than that.

Which is a good move on their part IMO. If I had a nickel for every time I had to explain how to save an image as something other than whatever you opened it as, I would have retired a year ago.

It is a good move. Should save people from accidentally saving over images that they didn't intend to overwrite.

If you use the partha version look better the file menu:
there are also Save xcf and Export (for imagines already saved as xcf) and Save as xcf and Export, that allow to save the xcf and simultaneously to export jpg and/or png
(with same name in the same folder of the xcf)

It save me a lot of time, avoided a lot of warnings to click out, and remove any excuse to not saving the original xcf

PS
The script may also be easily modified to add other formats
Are only 2 to keep it simple but if requested more may be added

I don't know if they'll change this or not, but I hope they can find a way to make it clearer when a layer's transparency is locked and when it isn't. From Partha's version, it would appear that they took out the little check mark box that indicated when a layer was locked. I hope they put that back in. I don't understand the decision to take it out. They replaced it with a checkered box, but that's not clear enough for me. It doesn't stand out enough.

I have Gimp installed in /opt. I do not know if that, or a problem with gimp or GTK 2.24.8.

Well, here's the solution to that problem:
http://www.gimpusers.com/forums/gimp-us ... ut-devices

I had to configure gtk with "--with-xinput=yes" option:
./configure --with-xinput=yes

Perhaps for Gerard and Partha this was obvious, but I did not know

Am attempting to build 2.7.4 on Ubuntu 10.10 AMD64. I installed the pre-req's, but am getting an error here:

checking for GTK+ - version >= 2.24.7... no
*** Could not run GTK+ test program, checking why...
*** The test program failed to compile or link. See the file config.log for the
*** exact error that occured. This usually means GTK+ is incorrectly installed.
configure: error: Test for GTK+ failed. See the file 'INSTALL' for help.

I have GTK+ 3.2.3 installed (tried with --prefix=/usr and without, both installed). And it reports being installed:

rick@rick-amd64:~$ pkg-config --libs gtk+-3.0
-L/usr/local/lib -lgtk-3 -lgdk-3 -latk-1.0 -lgio-2.0 -lpangoft2-1.0 -lpangocairo-1.0 -lgdk_pixbuf-2.0 -lcairo-gobject -lcairo -lpango-1.0 -lfreetype -lfontconfig -lgobject-2.0 -lglib-2.0

I've manually extracted the conftest.c code out of the configure script, and I had to add several -I/usr/local/include/package-x.y/ and -I/usr/lib/package.x.y/include/ references to get it to compile. So I'm pretty sure it's a path issue as GTK+ 3.x installed to /usr/local/. I'm just not sure how to fix it.

The config.log file shows this:
configure:17298: checking for GTK+ - version >= 2.24.7
configure:17426: result: no
configure:17454: gcc -o conftest -g -O2 -Wall -Wdeclaration-after-statement -Wmissing-prototypes -Werror=missing-prototypes -Wstrict-prototypes -Wmissing-declarations -Winit-self -Wpointer-arith -Wold-style-definition -Wmissing-format-attribute -Wformat-security  -fno-common -fdiagnostics-show-option      conftest.c   >&5
conftest.c:49: fatal error: gtk/gtk.h: No such file or directory
compilation terminated.

Can anybody help me resolve this? Thanks in advance!

Best regards,
Rick C. Hodgin

Yes, you cannot use GTK+ 3.0. You have to downgrade to GTK+2.24.8. GTK+3.0 migration is promised for the next version.

Thanks that fixed it. Everything configured. Still having some issues on "make" step though. Will look at them tomorrow.

I was getting this error when I try to install pygobject-2.28.6:

After some searching, I found the error was the result of introspection. The suggested work-arounds were to re-run configure with --disable-introspection. For me that fixed it.

Building GIMP 2.7.4 on an older distro is proving quite the challenge. :-) I'm no expert by far, but so far I'm up to manually installing 16 separate packages (beyond build-essential, python, flex and bison) that are newer than my distro's (originally Ubuntu 10.10, now using Trisquel 5) or are not installed by default at all.
