I used Slax over the holidays to rip a DVD to my netbook (for viewing on the trip home). I didn't take my DVD drive with me and my parents only have Windows.

This one actually interests me. :)
http://www.ylmf.org/en/index.html

I figured it out after a bit of looking around the website.
Found i had to dl UNetbootin first and then select the iso through that.
Actually i would like to install this to my F:/ drive and boot into it from there.
Anyone know how to do that?

It shows a way to do it with a partitioned drive.I have a separate F:/ drive with 34gigs of space i want to set it up on. :)

Yeah i am downloading the iso now 55% completed.
I use Windows XP so its about the same really.

I want to install to my F drive though not the USB.
Reading farther down it shows how to install into a partitioned drive.
Maybe i can just select the F drive and do it that way?

EDIT - I figured it out i think. :)

Thanks

Hey this is really cool i can load Gimp from other drives so no need to install it to the USB.Well unless i wanna take it with me which i probably never will.
So i guess i will just add some shortcuts and that should be good enough. :)

Thanks for the link, i am really happy with this.Wine works and everything.

Quite few ways, actually. However, Firefox is very configurable and it should be possible to set it up the way you like. Could you describe the differences that confront you?

Just my favorites, persona, and the font is all. Other than that i like it. :)
This should get me used to using Wine and other Linux apps so i can go forward with a full install later on.

I really, really like it though.

And Gimp looks so different than on Windows. :P

I might have to put Wubi back on here.. since the last time i restored to factory i never put it back on my laptop. I did like it and it seemed to run fast. I also liked the fact that i could access my windows folders from ubuntu just by typing /host into the address bar of firefox

I've run ubuntu, debian, fedora and countless variations on a theme. I have been running ubuntu 11.10 with gnome shell from a 16gb flashdrive. I just purchased a 640 gb portable HD and have installed mint12. I shall be trying to install fedora along side it soon. I like the distros with gnome shell, so . . . .

For favorites: use CTRL+SHIFT+D to open the "Show All Bookmarks" dialog (if that key combination doesn't work in Windows then look for a similar command in your Bookmarks/Favorites menu). In the menus at the top of the dialog you will find commands for exporting and importing your bookmarks. Use these to export your bookmarks from WIndows, then switch to your Ymlf system and import them.

You can select your font in the "Content" section of the Preferences dialog. For greater control, type "about:config" in the location bar and use "font" as your Filter text (you should see about a hundred different options, but most of them are for foreign languages).

I'm not sure what you mean by persona, but if you mean your passwords to various websites, these are kept in two files which on GNU/Linux are located in the $HOME/.mozilla/firefox/????????.default/ directory (the question marks represent a random hash string such 'yfdcq635'. The two files are named "key3.db" and "signons.sqlite". If you copy these files from your Windows machine then you should have all of your original passwords. (Be a little cautious about this and backup the original files, especially if the Firefox version numbers are significantly different. This may not work.)

Then you may import i mean copy from windows bookmarks and some preferences, not plugin but maybe even the persona not sure about...but anyway is all available also on linux

In Firefox-

I can run anything in my computer by just allowing wine to run it.No need to type anything.

I got it all back now though.I figured out the import option after looking around for a bit. :)
Thanks for all your help guys.

I like synaptic package manager too.Just installed Inkscape.

I think i will go out and buy a larger flash drive next week and redo the install to that.
What is really nice is i have this all installed on a 4gig USB :lol
And i still have 2.2 gigs left of room. ;)

One problem i ran into.I downloaded Ofnuts newest script (mirror paths), and tried to install it by dragging it to the usr/lib/gimp/2.0/plug-ins folder and it said permission denied.
The system doesn't consider me admin on that USB drive i guess.

you can't do as root ?

if is ubuntu or debian just with typing "sudo nautilus" in the terminal , confirm, and then you may do graphically just normally (...uh i right sudo nautilus but for you may be "sudo name-of your-file-manager-here"

just remember to close the terminal at the end, will close also the file manager you called from command line and you will be no more root

i found handy to make operation as drag and drop or copy and paste as root, but would be no good continue to use the file browser as root after

EDIT

sometimes a missed question mark may really alter the sense... :gaah fixed now !
