Hi everyone

I just downloaded Gimp 2.8.2 and it's my first look at any version of the program. It feels very friendly & familiar from my photoshop days. I tried to install G'Mic and it's not appearing in my Filters.

I have read on forums about going to Edit/Preferences/folders/plug-ins to fix the problem, but my version of Gimp 2.8.2 does NOT have "Preferences" listed under "Edit." It's listed under the "Gimp" tab, but "plug-ins" is nowhere to be seen under "folders." I downloaded the recommended version for my operating system (Snow Leopard - using a Mac Mini).

Everything I see says that Preferences should be populated under Edit - but it's just not there...

Can anyone help me with this? I would love to have G'MIC operational in my GIMP program.

Here's my info...
Mac OSX 10.6.8
GIMP 2.8.2
G'MIC 1.5.1.9_macosx_SnowLeopard.dmg

Thanks. I guess my first question is... should my Gimp 2.8.2 for Snow Leopard have "Preferences" listed under "Edit" ? - because mine does not.

I am a mac user and my suggestion is download McGimp 2.8.2 from Partha's website here. G'Mic is already included in his version, along with some other plug-ins. The only thing you have to watch for is to not have any other gimps in your apps folder, as this is where McGimp goes.

oh and I forgot...I had the same problem as you in finding preferences. IIRC, when you have Gimp open, click on the Gimp 2.8 and preferences should be in the drop-down.

You rock 2-ton! I downloaded McGimp & all is well in Straticusland.

Yeah, I found preferences under the Gimp 2.8 tab also, but under folders it doesn't list plug-ins. I'm not sure what this version is about in that regards, but it does appear to be different. I was only concerned about that when I thought I needed it to correct this G'Mic problem. Now that it's all included in the McGimp, I'm mo' better now so I'll stop whinning all over you guys.

Thanks again! (until the next adventure)

Welcome to GimpChat Straticus! Or Straticus508. We all now those other 507 Straticuses where impostors.

Nice to see another Mac type here. Partha build of Gimp is great in that it includes the G'mic. Not sure if that is case on the windows side, but regardless it is a good thing. I can't remember what I did before I started using Partha's build. He'd be the guy to explain the move of the preferences for Gimp from Edit to new place "Gimp" but thinks that was a structural change. My speculation was because the mac version doesn't rely on X11? That's my guess of the day.

Happy Gimping!

When you use GMic, don't forget to have internet checked and hit the refresh icon so you will have the newest new filters...samj has been on a roll and is adding new filters to GMic often!

Reason for preferences being in the GIMP 2.8 menu is because this is now a native version of GIMP for mac so some things are a little different to the previous versions which needed X11 to operate. This version stands on its own without that.
