Hi all, I am currently creating a presentation on GIMP for my assignment in university. I would just like to know what would you change about GIMP or what you add to make it better?

Thanks your feedback will help me a lot.

Higher bit depth. 8 bits is not enough for photography.

1.With ^higher bit depth support, which will be available in 2.10 stable release, naturally, need raw files support as 'out of the box' feature, rather than 3rd party plugin.
2. Better color management (LittleCMS2 - already being done, but CMYK profile, LAB color profile should be part of standard installation)
3. Better color conversion coding (e.g. graphic editor to monitor software)
4. Switching from OpenCL to better alternative graphic acceleration software (wishful thinking - not going to happen).
5. Improve GIMP multithreading capabilities. An option of direct CPU rendering.
6. Full EPS, PSD file formats support.
7. Better text editor
8. Better gradient editor
9. More vector elements (like vector layers with object(s)/group selection, etc.)
10. More animation choices (up-to-date GAP or analogue, animated webp, apng, swf support)

Full GEGL porting, LCMS2, Unified Transform Tool - are already in active development and available in 2.9 git version

they improved both tools a lot in 2.8
what exactly do you want to have changed ?

i would like to see the scale tool tweaked a bit
the grid can be a bit annoying at times (because its get s in the way of seeing your layer too much) and when i want to scale a text converted into a path, the grid is always spread abou the whole size of the layer

At least there are possibilities with GEGL:

Is PSD open format? Perhaps it would help if the owners of those formats published specifications.
Anyway, I do not know anything about EPS format that seems to be open.

@Esper
Text handling rethinking by GIMP architect Peter Sikking here. There are 3 parts.
Gradient editor. No doubt it has become better in 2.8, but there is always room for improvement. I would like to have an easier to tweak editor, more accentuated nod-based (on canvas?) gradient editor (think of text editor but for gradients) and the ability of applying multiple gradients at once (like in Inkscape).

@YAFU
There was a study conducted last summer by a group of specialists showing that OpenCL has some issues, the major one being a high computation time with NVIDIA and AMD graphic cards. Besides, OpenCl has been chosen just because in fits well with GEGL and does not need a lot of re-coding, not because it is the best accelerator.
PSD and EPS are publicly documented, specs are available here. Some Open Source Software have a better support of EPS and PSD formats than GIMP. E.g. Scribus, which does not need ghostscript for EPS import/export procedures. GIMP has to use gs all the time, hence, so many issues.

About OpenCL, my misunderstanding with the English. Now I understand what you meant.

Thanks K1TesseraEna, the Peter Sikking link and that site have some great info.

No, it's a Photoshop file that can be read but not written by programs other than Adobe. Think of EPS as an outdated version of a PDF.

Decide to bite the bullet and allow for node editing capability. Below's an example of PostWorkshop Pro node output. :)
