Thought it would be fun to try and create a text effect that looks like it has had a satin sheet draped over it.

Here is my results.

Then I thought, why not make it a challenge thread.

A tutorial for creating a satin texture can be found here

Made a nice shiny metallic red there Esper, I like it.

The script does work in 2.8 because I do have it. though don't like using it.

I've still been playing with this idea, the previous version seemed to go flat on the displace map so I have tried displacing the text after the first step in the satin tutorial, Bit harder to read but does seem better coverage.

And why I was playing with the displace filter and still having other settings in place this mistake happened.

hearty: you really don't make it easy for yourself, do you ? :hehe i think the first attempt looks better than the second, but the fabric looks a bit matte for satin. and that's one nice, blingy "mistake" you made!
esper: looks really nice with the red shiny surface on the text!

GMIC color>metallic, GMIC's anisotrophic (fake smudge), and a few other blends. Got to get ready for work now. :)

hm, there is not much to it, Graechan

i started pretty wild with the gradient, without paying much attention
then i discovered, that you get "stripes", when you make tiny strokes
as in the linked tutorial, i blurred it by 25 and applied the edge detect, but i used a higher value, something like 6 or more on Prewitt Compass
then i applied 'Displace' on the selected text set to 45/35

EDIT: the trick is this: save the selected text to a channel, blur the channel by 25 and use it as the displacement map !

the outer glow is a light blue blurred layer
and the glow inside is a radial gradient from white inside, to a dark greyblue on the outside on 'Grain Merge'

without the make up it looks like this

and this is what it looked like when i was ready with the gradient stroking

Well this has become an interesting thread, some lovely results, even if they aren't in keeping with the theme.

sorry he4rty for the hijacking but you really started some good experimentation with this thread

i guess you had the same accident as i had, with your super shiny golden text ?
the bumpmap appeared in the displace map ?

this was actually fun - i hadn't expected that :). i was just dead tired of hearts and cuteness after making a bucketload of valentine's greetings, so i thought i'd just do something uncute and geeky and ended up playing happily for a loong time.
none of my results looked anything like satin and i got nothing that looked even close to a piece of satin fabric covering a text layer, but i got some nice looking text squares anyway - i especially liked the ones where the text layer was inverted, like the red picture here.

he4rty: thank you - i'm curious why you preferred the pink one, though? i thought the effect on the red one looked cooler, though it was farthest from what i was trying to make, and i thought the green was the closest to what i was after. the only thing i liked best about the pink one was the colour :hehe .

Maybe like you I was drawn in by the colour, very shiny and satin looking.
