GnuTux, I proposed in one of the threads to create 'Focused Critique' subcategory on our forum.
People who are not afraid to get a heart attack and want to learn a thing or two about arts and their piece of art in particular can post there.
Most importantly, people will feel free to give a critique.
For those who are faint on heart or consider their work accomplished art would post in GIMP art as usual

That's a pretty good idea. I'm not sure if it would solve the problem we recently had, where one of our members left because of the critique they received. I guess the only way to solve that problem would be to enforce a No Critique rule, except in the "Focused Critique" section. Otherwise, members, especially new ones, are probably going to give critique anyway.

I think we should split this topic to its own thread for further discussion.

Are you talking about gramg? I don't think the critique she received from one of our members was the determining factor in her decision to drop off. There was much more to it, namely the Knotter thread. Let's split this thread and bring it up for discussion, always interesting what other members think about all this. Not sure if enforcing No critique rule would be effective, just don't see how. Would mods police and weed out harsh comments?

No, I wasn't referring to gramg. She left because the threads in which she deleted her images, were completely removed, per our TOS. At least that is what I got from the whole debacle. I do think the knotter thread started that whole ball rolling. I was actually referring to gms.

Yes, I'm thinking moderating out any critique from the Art Section and only allowing critique in the "Focused Critique" section would be the only way it would work.

I'll split this topic to its own thread in just a bit..

GMG is gone? OMG, I loved his sense of humor. Could not imagine he was so sensitive to critique though.

This thread was split from the Critique thread...

I would be interested to hear what other members think of the idea of having a dedicated section where "Focused Critique" would be solicited. Critique of art would only be allowed in the "Focused Critique" section. Moderators would remove critique from threads placed in the Art section, or the thread would be moved to the Critique section, at the authors request.

What are your thoughts on this suggestion?

I have a feeling a "Focused Critique Section" will get out of hand. I am definitely not for it.

As far as I know, only one person has left because of critique and as far as I can tell, it wasn't really negative. I actually though it was constructive but some people are sensitive about these things.

@ Esper, would you suggest that we do anything different to avoid this kind of thing in the future?

What about the idea of adding a "Focused Critique" section for those who want the REALLY constructive stuff, while leaving the current Art section unmoderated for critique (as it is now)?

@ Rod, you make a good point. It could just makes things worse.

no
why ?

i think that conflict is a normal part of being human

there was discussion, said person was presented with different kind of opinions
person insisted on being emotional
people realized
end of story

EDIT:
also people could have said harsher things
but as this is not allowed....
GC is a pretty cuddly forum

I have a criticism about "Creating A Focused Critique Section" :hehe

I personally do not like the idea. I do not understand the point someone wants to show their work in an "Opinion Forum" without a feedback with other users. If someone wants to just show their work, it might be better to do it in a blog for example, and not in a forum.
I think it's something that greatly limit the forum, with many misunderstandings about whether a comment was a criticism or it has not been a criticism, requiring a lot of work for moderation.
In any case for not limiting/censoring much the forum about what a user can say, I would prefer a "Not Focused Critique Section" for those (I think few users) who do not want to be criticized.

I agree with Esper and Rod. I prefer to keep things as they are.

I am not much of an artist or GFXer, but I think if someone is not wanting to hear what people have to say about their efforts, pro or con, then they do not need to post it in the first place. if they cannot take constructive critique or someone's personal opinion, but want to post their work, they perhaps this isn't the kind of place for them. I think things should stay as they are. I have seen a little bit of harsh critique, but not in a mean way, it was always meant to be helpful and honest. I do not think it helps anyone to just have everyone say your work is great when there are ways to make it better. So do we want this to be kumbaya chat?

Look guys, if you don't want to post your work in FC it's fine, just ignore this section, nothing changes for you.
I'm actually motivated not by the possibility to give a critique but the other way around.
In other words, i'm the one who wants to receive honest opinion about my work. I want to grow as an artist.
Now I have to ask for that!!! This is NOT NORMAL!!! And I feel awkward because of that.

After all, this is not something unusual, lots of other artistic websites have FC section.
@YAFU you're frequent to BlenderArtists forum, we have a similar section there, don't we?

If you specifically want to have critique, can't you just type in "C&C please"?

I don't feel it's really necessary.

When I do ask for C&C i can tell the difference. Instead of Nice and Nice kind of comments
I'm getting some sort of thought process from the viewers. It really does benefit every party on both sides of critique.

Besides, I don't know why the word Critique arises negative associations here. Critique can be positive, constructive, emotional or rational,
reasonable or not, focused on specific aspects, harsh, dumb, etc, etc, etc.

I think people might confuse Critique with Criticism.

I am new to this forum. I did not know that there was an exclusive section focused on the criticism
Anyway, without knowing that I had made some criticism, and also I criticized some criticism :hehe
So I hope I have made this criticism in the correct section and that nobody was offended.

I think many things would change if it is limited what you can say in the forum. I prefer to avoid anything that looks like a censorship or limit the freedom of expression (as long as all is said respectfully)

Only reason I would say allow a focused critique section would be because there are some here who are very good at art and still like to be critiqued because they would like to know if there is anything they can improve upon.
Others may not feel 'up to scratch' or much less confident and may not post really good works of art even in the 'Gimp Art' forum because of that. They can still ask for critique or not.

The BlenderArtists community is huge compared to GC. Really.
They have FC section there http://blenderartists.org/forum/forumdi ... d-Critique
Just look it up! I can't recall any out of hand situation there in the last 10 months (the day I joined).
Now, do you know why they have FC section? Because people there REALLY want to learn stuff,
not just to please their egos.

@YAFU no, what GnuTux said about moderating criticism is going to happen anyway, regardless of FC section.
That is because we lost a couple of members due to someones unpolished comments.
This is just another point for creating such section where ppl can talk business instead of
exchanging politeness.

Peace out.
