This is our Milky Way galaxy converted via the Droste technique using Mathmap (from reading the Flickr posts I appear to be some 4 years behind the times). I duplicated the original image and inverted the image layers using Soft Light mode, then ran PC's Graphic Boost Dark on the flattened image.

I was originally seeking a way to make some "unique" fractal designs for screen printing, which I would then apply to t-shirts. Droste appears to be an interesting way to create fractals.

I wonder if anyone here knows where the term droste came from.
Being Dutch I am familiar with this picture on Droste cocoa.
On the plate is a box with the same picture.
Thus this is repeated endlessly.

The original layer of my above image went into repeated sequences, but the technique was all too common with anything you threw at it. It looked nice, but it was just more of the same pattern repeated to infinity. I decided to toss the droste filter's pole settings and fractal generator into high gear and it added some punch-drunk "pizazz" into the scene to spread the cheer around. Duplicating the layer and reversing the effect (then combining the two) made for some real eye-popping imagery. The only problem then was, with so many settings to play with, picking which setting/imagery you liked best. You could literally waste hours trying to find that "perfect storm".

I strongly recommend those who haven't tried this, to give it a shot.

I used the same kind of effect with an old version of my website.
The index page had a monitor on it that showed the index page with a monitor on it...and so on and so on...it was pretty cool.

I like mirror droste effects the best.

I am finally getting somewhere with MathMap, using the composer with Droste and Mercator filters. I did have to jump into G'MIC to use mirror array, (is there anything similar in MathMap? - I didn't see it) Anyway, I'm liking the fractal generations I get using this combination. As soon as I can figure out the best 4 color combination for screen printing, I will test some patterns out. (I'll probably go with gray monochrome colors on black cotton).

Wow that is cool..
Mathmap has something ... very vaguely similar to mirrored array

It is on the main tab are the " edges" (or "contour" ? i can't check by now ) options for X and Y
to choise how will be filled empty spaces
suppose you want map a image to a sphere, images are always rectangular so how to fill what outside the sphere:
color - with transparency or a solid color
mirror- with a mirrored image
warp - by warping

in some case the effect of "mirror" could be similar to mirrored array, but some filters as Droste really mixed up what inside and ouside the edges
so options as mirror and warp may give quite weird and surprising results

Not sure how mirror array works.
Here is a mod of the tile mm script to be a mirror tile:

stretched filter mirrortile (stretched image in, int n: 1-10 (3))
  if (floor(((x+1)*n)/W%2-1)) then
    newx = ((x+1)*n)%2-1;
  else
    newx = ((W-x+1)*n)%2-1;
  end;
  if (floor(((y+1)*n)/H%2-1)) then
    newy = ((y+1)*n)%2-1;
  else

  end;
  in(xy:[newx,newy])
end
