This is a cool effect! I used G'MIC BW Sketch (white on black on lower duplicate) and (white on transparent black) on top duplicate, added a slight blur (5px). I then pasted the original color photograph at the top and set its mode to addition (lowered the opacity of that layer to maximize bright and dark areas). Saved as a png, then opened the image again, duplicated the image, and set the top layer to addition once again to improve the brightness, with opacity adjustments.
I googled kirlian to see what the photographic equivalent was (it would be awesome if someone made a script/plug-in based on this effect).
