SallyAnne, pay attention: in the INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS.txt at point 3 of the attached MathMap-32-Install it is written
...3 plugins-folder place entire mathmap folder....
you should read MathMap (capital M) instead of mathmap, otherwise there is some confusion...

Thank you dinasset for being so patient with me. I said at the outset I was not computer literate as this is concerned
I will have another look at this when I get home tonight.

the dll is in gimp :)

I don't have any folders - MathMap (Capital 'M') except the 'MathMap-32-Install' folder which is now empty because I have put everything that was in it (except the install instructions) elsewhere.

OK, SallyAnne, let's start again:
1-unzip the file I attached (MathMap-32-Install.7z)
2-inside the unzipped folder MathMap-32-Install you find:
2a-folder MMInstall
2b-INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS.txt
3.open MMInstall, inside you find:
3a-bin = the folder which contains the 3 .dll you have to extract and put on Program Files/GIMP 2/bin folder
3b-mathmap folder = the folder you have to put under Users/username/.gimp-2.8
3c-plug-ins folder
4-open this last folder (plug-ins), inside you find MathMap (capital M)
5-put this folder under Users/username/.gimp-2.8/plug-ins
6-have in your preference a pointer to Users\username\plug-ins\MathMap
Try...

Wow, perfect sallyanne, nice of dinasset to stick with you on this.
I think those instructions should be stickied in gimp help for others who have problems installing math map.

Thank you Molly - That globe was from Graechan's Christmas Ornament Script but I needed MathMap to run it. Yes it would be good. So much more to check out in MathMap now too. Not had a look today yet to see if it is still there....Yep it is. I was a little worried last night that it would not be there once I closed and reopened
Thank you dinasset for putting up with thick headed people like me.
