Did you browse for the file extension type? Here's a piece of the save dialog with the png + apng choice to choose.

You ninja'd my addition, fencepost. If the Molly image doesn't open as layers, then it's definitely not working for you.

Bummer. :( Hopefully MaxSt will come up with some solutions. He's got a start on it.

BTW, MaxSt, you can upload attachments directly here in GimpChat, there is no need to go to an outside source. Click reply and scroll down and use the Upload attachment dialog. Just browse for your file click Add the file, wait for it to upload. All done! :-D

There's something there, but after saving and opening it up again it I get a one layer, mostly transparent image. :(

I was experiencing the exact same results that you all are describing before updating libpng to support APNG (in Linux).

Doesn't the Windows version of GIMP also use libpng per GTK+?

Perhaps there is an associated DLL that provides PNG functions in GIMP that needs to be updated to support animated PNGs. There must be a library of functions that currently handles standard PNG files in GIMP for Windows so it stands to reason the standard PNG library would also need to be updated to support animated PNGs. I don't think this plug-in includes any PNG lib functions.

I seem to remember Molly having issues with the libpng DLL in this thread.

That DLL probably needs patching to support animated PNGs before the APNG plug-in will work properly.

A question, MaxSt: Do the plug-in files HAVE to go into the gimp2.0 folder in Program Files, or will it work ok in the Docs & Settings/<username>/.gimp-2.6/plug-in folder?

I tried both locations, and yes, it works in both cases.

But since my
C:\Documents and Settings\<username\.gimp-2.6\plug-ins\
folder is empty, and my
C:\Program Files\GIMP-2.0\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins\
folder has like 200 plugins or so, I assume the second location is more correct.

But it works from both places.

Yes, that's the easiest test to see if plugin is installed correctly.

Step 1. If this "PNG+APNG image" option is visible, you installed plugin in the right place.
Step 2. Try loading existing APNG: Image using this "PNG+APNG" option. You should see 10 frames loaded as layers.
Step 3. Try resaving it, again using this "PNG+APNG" option and "as animation" checkbox on.
Step 4. See if it's animated in Firefox or XnView.

It could happen if you open it without choosing "PNG+APNG" filetype.

Choose "PNG+APNG" filetype while opening, and it will open as 10 layers.

Good.

Now try re-saving it, and then check the result in Firefox.

ok I made a fresh new text. I saved it onto desktop. I re-opened it the way you said and it works.
Now the problem is: I want to post my results in this thread but when I upload it, it isn't animated unless I open it in Gimp........
How do I upload it as animated?

We are only allowed to use the built in uload button on this forum. That is what I used. When I tried it, it wasn't animated. I will try it again.

I love it that I can finally use apng BUT I still shouldn't have to go the long way to open it like that. At least I don't think I should?????

Glad to hear this plug-in is working properly in Windows. I guess support for animated PNGs is already included.

I'll bet if you remove file-png from the system's plug-in folder (C:\Program Files\GIMP-2.0\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins\), control will be directed to the new apng-plugin by default when saving and loading, with no need to specify APNG+PNG.

That's the case in Linux and someone should test to see if this holds true in GIMP for Windows.

Now that this plug-in has been tested and shown to work properly, I'll attach it to the first post in this thread so users aren't redirected to rapid share.

Good job MaxSt and Molly. Thanks for compiling, posting and testing this plug-in!!

Wow. I just guess you are correct about that. I removed the file-png and rebooted gimp and I was able to open the layers with one click. woot......
Thank you very much TUXedo..... :jumpclapImage
