You guys are right. It uses flash if it's available, otherwise it uses HTML5. I would have expected the behavior to be the other way around and it use HTML5 as the default. Maybe you have to specify the default.

Just glad we have another way to share HTML5 video here; not sure how to display different size ratios though (may not be able too).

I've updated the existing bbvideo tag to support the use of HTML5 video on YouTube. GC members can insert YouTube videos the same as they always have, as in the example below.




All existing YouTube embeds will use HTML5, depending on your browser configuration. If your browser supports both, YouTube decides which player to use: html or flash. You can direct YouTube to always use HTML5 video player from the link below:

https://www.youtube.com/html5

If I click "Request HTML5 player", it uses it until I restart Firefox (which clears cookies). if I keep the cookies between browser sessions, YouTube remembers to use HTML5. So, it's tied to cookies.

I'll update the Vimeo code next. As far as I know, YouTube & Vimeo are the only two sites that have embeds video here on GC.

Just an observation; for older posts here that have youtube embedded videos, it may still ask you to enable flash plugin. Just refreshing the page causes the HTML5 player to show. Easy peasy. Funny that newer embedded youtube video posts didn't do this (past few week or so posts that is). Still, HTML5 is running nicely in my XP VM with Iron Browser. Thanks again Tux.

I don't have to refresh the page on existing YouTube video embeds in FireFox. In my case, It defaults to flash, unless I've told YouTube to use HTML5 here: https://www.youtube.com/html5. Without flash installed, it uses HTML5.

All of this behavior is new, as I just added the HTML5 code to the bbvideo tag this afternoon.

I'm just glad that Iron browser, by default, forbids flash plugin; you have to say yes for the site (either permanently or just one incidence). I deleted my Sandboxie session which means there should not be any cookies other then a very old one (which has my login stuff in it), but that old cookie could be causing the issue. It doesn't have the always enable flash plugin setting set though. I usually just set it every time I recover from a Sandboxie erasure but now I won't enable it. Don't care to delete the old login cookie and can tolerate page refresh to force HTML5 for me.
