I've added a feature that allows easier single forum and single topic searches. You'll see the following search boxes, at the top right, on each forum index and each topic index.



This can be faster than going to the search page and selecting each option. I hope you find it useful.

You're welcome, Mollly. I think I have the search feature working much better now. I switched over to Fulltext mysql and it appears to be finding all the keywords now. It's working much faster too.

The search feature will sometimes exclude commonly used words, like: the and not, as well as other two and three letter words, but that is normal for phpBB and doesn't really present a problem.

One feature I'd like to see in PHPBB forums is to search a topic for all posts by a particular user. Sometimes a post responds to a user's comment or picture that appeared earlier in the thread, but does not provide a link. Finding the original post to which the response is made requires manually searching through the preceding pages, which in some cases can be lots of pages. For what it's worth, I do not recall ever seeing this feature on a PHPBB forum.

Exactly what I was thinking. An author search seems to works although the results are all mentions. I'm curious if there is a query prefix a user can add to isolate the member name field?

GnuTux has spent many hours streamlining Gimp Chat and making it an easy to use board. He's always open to new ideas and if someone has a request he takes it very seriously.

No, you would not like Gimp Chat nearly as much using phpBB out of the box.

@SaulGoode - That would be a good option. As Odin mentioned, searching for the member name displays the replies, as well, which could be useful, but not as much as only displaying the member's posts in the topic. I'll need to think about how to go about implementing this. Maybe a prefix to the member name , as Odin suggests, would be a doable approach.

@Oregonian - Thanks and you're so right. A vanilla phpBB board is not nearly as useful as the customized board we use here.

I likes me some good search options

I've implemented this feature for both topics and forums. You can search individual topics (or forums) for posts by a particular member. Wildcards like gnu* or *good* are supported (3 char min).

The new dialog appears on the left side, just above a topic index/forum index.

@Odin - I chose to implement a separate dialog for the sake of clarity. If I had used a prefix of some sort, no one would know about it. This way, the option is clear and easy to use, even for new members.
