Hello there,
I've added a new filter in the G'MIC plug-in for GIMP, called Layers / Stroke.
It basically extract the interface between opaque and transparent objects in a layer, but it can do a lot more.
I find it interesting for doing text effects.
Here are two examples of use. The original image is just a white text on a black background.
First, with quite basic settings:

Then, with more complex settings:

What do you think about it ? Any idea for cool things to add (but still in the spirit of a Stroke filter of course :) )?

Definitely looks real cool David. I wonder if you could add a pattern stroke or brush stroke option? :)

No Lyle, I can't unfortunately. I cannot access patterns from GIMP.

Here is another try, with the mix of some G'MIC filters : Layers / Stroke for the laser, Rendering / 3d lathing for the saber base, and Degradations / Noise + Light & Shadows / Light rays for the background (and Colors / Color balance for tinting it in red).
No GIMP filters were hurt during this 5mn rendering :)

ronounours: i understand that g'mic filters can't access gimp patterns, but would it be possible to make a pattern stroke based on a g'mic-rendered pattern? could you for example get a stroke with the plaid pattern or lava on it?

What a cool idea AnMal. Maybe even make squiggly so you can simulate Kirlian photography (been on this quest now for 4 years; had some hits and misses). :)

I've been having fun playing with it. I haven't made anything I want to post yet though.

I do have one nitpicky question: In the color choices, the Opacity goes from 0 - 255 instead of 0 - 100. That's in the Linux 64bit version.
