I don't remember from where I downloaded my version of GIMP, but probably it was the official website (the barebones version of GIMP). I was afraid to trust any version from another source. It was created on my Mac OS X system on February 7, 2013, and currently it's version 2.8.4.

I just downloaded G'MIC for Macintosh OS X. The download has Macgmic_1.6.7_macosx_64-Yosemite.dmg as its filename.

When I mount that disk image, I see a variety of folders and files. I don't know which one(s) I should copy to GIMP's plugins folder. The README file is difficult to understand.

I'm using Yosemite 10.10.3 so I'm guessing the "10.10.5_Yosemite" folder might be my best choice. Inside there, I see folders named "cam" and "X" and files named "gmic" and "gmic_gimp" and "zart".

I tried copying that "gmic_gimp", and also the one inside that "X" folder, to the plugins directory:
/Users/ek/Library/Application Support/GIMP/2.8/plug-ins
I also tried copying to:
/Applications/GIMP.app/Contents/Resources/lib/gimp/2.0/plug-ins
None of these resulted in G'MIC appearing under GIMP's Filters menu.

I have X11 XQuartz 2.7.4 already installed. Does that matter?

Why is this not working?

Thanks in advance for your knowledge!

You may do better to get Partha's version of MacGimp and also then G'MIC. He has the download link for Mac Gimp and G'MIC there. http://www.partha.com/
Or you could wait for a member who uses Mac computers (I use Windows)

I use gimp on my iMac here using ElCapitan 10.11.1
and I have been using gimp from this source.
There’s a Yosemite version there too.

http://gimp.lisanet.de
Follow the links to the The download’s page.

It’s version 2.8.14p2 and it's been working well.

My G’mic version is 1.6.6.2 and is installed @ /Users/MyName/Library/Application Support/Gimp/2.8/plug-ins,

It is not the very latest version, and it’s a little slow to load here, but it works.
I don’t recall where I got if from.

Hope this helps.

Hi, I am a bit busy to respond in time!

Please make clear what is difficult to understand in the README. I will change it.

However, the dmg contains the cli (command-line-interface) gmic linked against MacPorts and the GIMP plugin gmic_gimp built for the GIMP build from GIMPonOSX, see the last post. There are several versions of gmic_gimp linked against the different GIMP versions from GIMPonOSX.

My recommendation is to try the most recent OS-Version builds first, provided you have the GIMPonOSX version! The <version>/X/gmic_gimp allows to use the rel. new interactive functions based on X11 of the plugin provided XQuartz is installed.

As long as you don't need the latest developments of the gmic_gimp plugin, actually 1.6.8_pre (with lots of additions!), why not using Parthas GIMP. Even the GIMPonOSX Gimp without any addition, still with an older gmic_gimp plugin is possible. It is a pity with all these different GIMP's on Mac! And all linked with different libraries and strategies making the addition of plugins to become a nasty job.

The <version>/cam/gmic is the cli with openCV (camera) support.

By the way, verify to have the folder path in GIMP->Preferences->folders->plugins where you have copied the plugin. DON'T copy into the App library path! There is or was at least a running gmic_gimp plugin, however not recent. That version can be repaired by reinstalling GIMP!

Thanks for you help for Mac users.

Concerning slowliness of your gmic_gimp plugin 1.6.6.2:
Since version 1.6.7 the plugin is build with working parallel support (unluckily not openMP) and is optimized. So maybe it is worth a trial. I would even recommend to try the 'latest' version, actually 1.6.8-pre. Make a backup from 1.6.6.2, it was a pre-release, the following stable release is 1.6.7

karo03de, thanks so much for that tip, re; 1.6.6.2 and trying 1.6.7 in it’s place.

I found a copy of it at : http://gmic.eu/

and swapped out it for the older one that I was using, and now it pops right open !!! :yes
Only a 2-3 second wait, and all the various filters work a lot faster too.

I can’t believe how much better this is.

Thanks again

Gangle: You are welcome.

If you don't mind you could even try a latest version built for El Capitan (http://karo03.bplaced.net/gmic/git/Macg ... apitan.dmg). I have not made the full move to 10.11, still experimenting.

Well, thanks again.
Now 1.6.8
It seems to be working fine here, so far. :bigthup
I only tried it for 5-6 minutes and will do some more testing later and will report any errors and such, if I find anything.

G angle:
meanwhile also openMP is possible with Mac XCode 7. If you don't mind, try the pre-release built 1.6.9 under El Capitan (http://karo03.bplaced.net/gmic/git/Macg ... apitan.dmg) or the some days newer Yosemite pre-release built 1.6.9 (http://karo03.bplaced.net/gmic/git/Macg ... semite.dmg)

I have to correct! openMP is still not possible with Mac XCode7! The compiler does not cry anymore but the library libgomp is not part of the apple standard XCode environment! My version erroneously linked libgimp from another compiler environment. This is corrected.

Hello,
I am totally new to plugins. I was able to install scriptfu recently and just love it. Would love to try to instal G'MIC. I have downloaded the correct GIMP and G'MIC but I am unsure what to do with all the G'MIC folders. I have two folders labeled "cli" and "gimp" and the "zart.app". What do I exactly do to install G'MIC? I read through the readme file but it was above my level of understanding and knowledge.

Might be better if you ask your question as a new topic in the help section beginning with your Operating System etc. You will be more likely to get an answer.

More and more of the gimps being made today include G'MIC with them.
