Hi all,
I've been a GIMP user for some time now, and when I finally upgraded my Mac from Lion to El Capitan (yeah, I know, kinda nuts), I was pleased to see that GIMP 2.8.2 still worked, with a few glitches that I was able to work around. I thought that I might be happier with the newest coolest version, 2.8.16. That's where my trouble began, and after posting in the GIMP forum, I was sent here, where hopefully there are more Mac users.
I don't want to be posting this in the wrong area, so I'll stop here, and maybe start a new thread. Anyone had trouble putting 2.8.16 on El Cap?
Thanks!

Hello Njslim and welcome to Gimp Chat.
It would be a good idea to elaborate on the issue(s) you're having, with a Gimp Help topic post.

Hello njslim, welcome to Gimp Chat. I'm on a Mac running El Capitan but I have 2.8.14 - I haven't had a problem running Gimp. What sort of problem are you having?

I have not upgraded to El Capitan for this exact reason, I'm afraid my Gimp won't work completely!

Oops  I thought I'd install 2.8.16 and now nothing works. Mac users, I'd refrain from installing this version on El Capitan. Guess I'll spend the rest of tonight trying to make things work again :gaah

Don’t be afraid to start over. It’s a new chance to rebuild what you want.

njslim, if you're still in need of help and still want to install 2.8.16, know the following. There is no Mac G'mic at the moment that will work with 2.8.16. Based on your initial question I installed this version and nothing worked - no scripts, plugins, fonts etc.

The way I got this version to work was to copy folder 2.8 to an external flash drive then I deleted the 2.8 folder from the Mac. I then used "AppCleaner" to uninstall Gimp from the system and all related files. Once that was done and I had emptied my "Trash" I restarted the Mac. You can now download the version of Gimp you want and install it - you will see that a new 2.8 folder will be created in [Users>Your Name>Library>Application Support>Gimp]. What I did then was to add the contents off of my flash drive back to the respective sub-folders in 2.8 (brushes, scripts, plug-ins, fonts etc.). Start Gimp up and wait a bit while it locates everything - note, it will take a while when it gets to fonts - while it is doing that do not touch your mouse or trackpad. Eventually, it opens up.

Hi, Wallace, Odinbc, Dalia, 2-ton, and Issabella,
I did figure that I should start a new thread specifically for this, but what I will say is, my older GIMP, 2.8.2 which was installed before the upgrade, still works. There were a couple of quirks, for instance, I had to turn off almost all the keyboard short cuts, because whenever I tried to type, even to save a file, it would activate functions ... I was able to turn a few back on, and I'm ok now. When I tried to install the 2.8.16 version, it uninstalled the older version, so I had to reinstall that, and I guess since the appropriate folders were already in place, it went alright. But installing the new version in El Capitan has been a problem. I'll continue in another 'help' thread.
Nice to meet you all!
