when i read tutorial i like see all illustrations, i found a bit disturbing have to open the spoilers one by one for example to have this tutorial viewtopic.php?f=10&t=1612 correctly displayed

I suppose spoilers useful for users with a slow connection, maybe even to spare bandwith in case the images are hosted on GC,
... but as user how i can open simultaneusly all that damn spoilers ?

If you click Spoiler Show on each image they will all stay open for you until the next time you go to that post.

What gives is that peeps are using spoiler tags for purposes which they were never intended.

Spoilers tags are meant to hide punchlines to jokes, answers to quizzes and reviews where the poster doesn't want to "spoil" the ending or reveal other details .. those kind of things.

They were never intended to hide multiple images for those with slow Internet connections.

I suggest we either enforce some rules regarding spoiler use or dump them all together from the posting screen.

Right, especially since the images get loaded the same whether they are in spoiler tags or not.

Didn't mean to sound crass Tux. Like PC, I sort of got annoyed by this too but didn't say anything until someone else did (because chicken I am; lol). I agree; I can see this being necessary if an image is greater then 1MByte for sure for those still unlucky to live in an area where high speed is not available (or can't afford it; trust me, I sympathize; currently in a lucky situation though broke I am).

While I agree that spoilers are an ineffective means of reducing bandwidth usage, it seems to me that their usage is a creative decision of a poster or tutorial author. If you find their employment for a purpose distasteful, it is certainly your prerogative to restrict it; however, I would submit that they can be exploited to good effect.

One example would be in providing the original image from which an effect has been generated. Many readers may care only about the artistic value of the end result, while some other may be interested in attempting alternative methods on the original and contrast the results. Spoiler tags can reduce what might be considered "clutter" by the former while still addressing the needs of the latter.

Another example, if a tutorial step instructs the user to "fuzzy select the blue scarf using Sample Merge" then this description is fairly complete and a screenshot is not particularly necessary, but by providing one within spoiler tags the reader who understands the instruction can continue without interruption while an uncertain user has access to a visual aid which might provide sufficient insight.

Spoiler tags can indeed be abused -- for example, it would make little sense for tutorial to instruct "set the values for Levels as shown in the following screenshot" and then hide the screenshot -- but they can also be an effective means of enhancing communication between writers and their readers.

I too end up using them, because somebody (i really can't remember who, and anyway finger pointing would not help here ) explained that was suggested use spoilers when posting images.

and we (again i too even if i hate hide images) all start to misuse spoiler and in the last week the use of spoilers spread more and more...to see spoilers used even for hide tut illustrations in your tut for me was just the last drop in a full glass, but was not you to fill the glass ...so is not about you or that tut

PLEASE STOP TO USE SPOILERS!! (if not to avoid to spoil jokes )

Exactly. The only advantage to using spoiler tags in this instance is that the screen doesn't jump around when loading 10 or 15 images at once. The images are loaded just the same.


I agree. There are times when using spoiler tags in areas for which the tags were not explicitly designed to be used, does make sense. A poster could certainly be creative in their use of spoiler tags, to the benefit of the reader.

My suggestion would be that the staff take a look at spoiler tags on a case by case basis. If it's determined the tags don't make sense and are more detrimental than helpful, the tags would be removed.

What I have to say about this, on most forums I use Spoilers to hide huge images, (this one resizes for you), on others it doesn't so something that is 3000 Pixels wide, can really distort that whole Page of the Topic.

I have to say they are annoying in Tutorials, especialy if you already have a basic idea of what you need to do, or have no idea whatsoever, then the images are useful in both situations.

Yes, that was me, but only because in the art of the month comp it said, by someone (can't remember who) to put your artwork in a spoiler tag if it was big.

Guess it just snowballed out of control.
