Hi there, I downloaded fonts and even on a text size 24 and zooming in it is terribly pixelated. I have increased the hinting I think I read somewhere and nothing, I make the font real small and scale it and still really bad. Also the options are sooooo tiny and I cant work out how to make the menu bigger, can anyone tell me how to fix these issues pleeeeeease :tyspin Image

Hinting is how the font is slightly distorted at small sizes to remain legible. What you are after is "anti-aliasing", which should be set in the Text tool options.

Text as a bitmap typically doesn't scale (terrible when scaled up, not so good when scaled down)à, because you cannot interchange scaling and anti-aliasing. So best make your text directly at the intended size (see "Image>Print size" if necessary, and set/calibrate the display definition in the Gimp Preferences).

Also, at 200% zoom everything looks pixelated.

Hi there! Thanks for your help, it immediately helped me, but not all the way, it is still pixelated.

I just want to use this text called Kidnapped at German Lands Four on a Tshirt design, the online companies like Printful dont have this font, so I thought if I make it a .bmp then I could upload it, but I just cant get it to work with me. Is there anything else I can do? And do you know how to make the menu options not soooo tiny? For years it has been like this on all my laptops and it is so hard to use Gimp at times

@Disoriginals
For a T-shirt print. Go and review the printing requirements of the company you intend to use.

Typically, the maximum print image area is 20cm x 20cm (10"x10") @ 300 pixels-per-inch (ppi) which will give a canvas size of 2360x2360 pix rather than your 640x400 pix. Even for a smaller logo, canvas size typically 1000x1000 pix

Start your image with those properties and you will find your text not 24 pix but maybe 400 or greater. With Ofnuts advice on anti-aliasing that will take care of the pixelation.

Is that Gimp 2.8? You should probably check that the display resolution is correct in Edit -> Preferences -> Display -> Monitor Resolution Gimp 2.8 often gets it wrong, Gimp 2.10 is much better. Assuming that is correct. Want to see what it looks like printed? Set the zoom level to 100% and in the View menu untick dot-for-dot (remember to tick back after viewing)

File format, .bmp? Again check with the printing co. lossless png or a compressed tif will give a smaller file size for transmittal.
