imo, the issue is that Gimp doesnt show the values used in the history tab.
The nice thing about G'MIC is you can set the plug-in to create a layer on the output that has the values used in the filter, so you can always recreate the effect.
Photoshop has the functionality to record steps and replay them later as something called an Action.
Which is more or less a script in Gimp.
Once we get node based non-destructive editing in Gimp (which is probably years ahead), everything will be easier.
Of course you can always use a screengrabber to record your workflow, although sometimes that interferes with the program and is also heavy on the processor.
