Honest John launch

I have been given an old negative (c 1970) of a launch.
I have difficulty discerning the cloud from the sky, and the smoke from the rocket motor.
Needless to say the sky is meant to be blue, and the grass green.
I have stuck the unadulterated negative at: https://www.dropbox.com/s/7a78fjdfmj298nr/hj.png?dl=1 as I seem to lose the launch pylon behind the smoke when I use Gimp "Invert".
Anyone got any tips?

As a reference I used the negative image provided by the link.
Far from being a satisfactory result, but that is what I achieved in today's attempts.

Tried this many times yesterday but it kept crashing my gimp. I think it is the size.
Could be that the missile pylon is hidden by the smoke anyhow.
I change it to a grey scale and came up with a really different picture.
One stage there it looked like the grass/ground in the forground is supposed to be green?
