I've been using Gimp on and off for many years, mostly just for photo editing and occasional graphics work. In recent years I've taken up astrophotography, so that's really increased my interest in improving my skills.

Right now I'm focusing on luminosity masks, since astro images start off very dark and require a huge amount of contrast boost, or stretch. Doing that enough to bring out faint details while not blowing out the brighter parts of the image can be challenging, so I'm hoping to get some smoother transitions between different stretches by means of luminosity masks.

Other than that, I have a degree in Physics and work at an R&D lab, where I've have no opportunities to use Gimp - yet!.

Don’t be afraid to start over. It’s a new chance to rebuild what you want.
