I found this website because one of my videos all of a sudden got lots more views then usual and it turned out to be embedded there.

I'm not sure where the best place is to bring it up. I'm mainly just curious about this website. They make it look like it's the official GIMP website, (and maybe the GIMP team is behind it?) but that's gimp.org.
It's geared towards GIMP for windows and it looks really good in my opinion. The download button directs you to sourceforge to the latest GIMP for windows install so there's nothing dodgy about that. There's even a section on how to help with development.

Does anyone know anything about this? I'm curious. link

I didn't want to email them directly and bombard them with questions. But I guess I could send an email and talk about them using my video.

It looks like a website by 1 or just a few people who want to promote GIMP and took it upon themselves to make a website that is super clear to Windows users and advertises itself. Doesn't really look the style of the developers who, I think, are all(?) Linux users.

The official gimp home page is in Iceland, this one is in Chicago. The gimp download is clean.

I sent a message to the official gimp mailing address postmaster about it and gave them the url address.Maybe its a new official Gimp team website based in the USA.Ill let you know what their response is.

I believe its a phishing for advertisements site.They get folks to the site making it popular using a FREE software package.Then they try and get those folks to pay for advertising on their site.

Chicago is 5 hours away from me. I could beam up there and slap em. But then I don't think my wife would let me.

Don't get the lynch mob out just yet. How much could they possible make out of a few ads? I can't even find this site on google if my life depended on it.

Besides, don't think they're doing anything wrong legally?

There is a (IMOO) somewhat bogus domain name reseller (centralnic) that owns a bunch of two letter .com domains ( .us.com .uk.com, etc.) and then sells subdomains of those to people who wanted the .com but couldn't get it. (Ironically, it appears the current owner of us.com is russian company...)

The owner of gimp.us.com (according to the centralnic whois page, as no one else has that information) is owned by a company "Tightrope Interactive" which, according to their own site, is an online marketing firm.

I don't know of them, but will check them out, too. I think if they are linking to your video or tutorial, they should at least let you know. I'm off for a bit, but will check them out when I get back.

I find it a bit unlikely that the GIMP team hired them to distribute GIMP.

One other thing I noticed straight away, starts to make sense now. That website was created with paint shop pro, or at least with one of the custom shapes from paint shop pro. The download arrow.

I do allow embedding of my videos so technically they don't have to let me know or ask me anything. I can keep track of how good the site is doing though , as long as my video is on it.

Yeah when i saw their email to ask for advertising space i figured they were some kind of marketing company.
It's a free country.

I guess it's ok as long as they are not trying to sell Gimp install packages and the Gimp team knows what's going on.

I came across another such site. They were selling some crap called PainterX or something, but it was just GIMP with a slightly grayer skin. So, I popped into the main GIMP IRC chatroom to let the dev team know. As soon as I posted my alert, a chat-bot picked up on the name of the program in my post and starting spewing advertisements for that program. So, these are scammers who infiltrated and are abusing GIMP's own IRC help chat to sell a free product they didn't make without giving any credit or links back to the original.

This is the only problem I have with open-source. While I love it, it can be easily abused.

I don't know if they are related to this gimp.us.com, but I wouldn't be surprised. And yes, I sent the dev team an email explaining my little 'discovery' too.

The program called "Painter X" is a Corel product, supposedly. I'm looking to see what more information I can find.

There are a few Gimp imitations out there, for instance...
Gimp-Shop, and GimPhoto.

The first version of gimp I had was gimp shop. It's totally broken and abandoned. It was an attempt to do away the 3 separate windows in gimp and was a good idea; unfortunately it crashed all the time and no attempt was made to update it.

Yeah that was the one with the separate Gimp-pad dl wasn't it?

I just now looked it up. It looks like it's been revamped. I still wouldn't recommend it. As far as I can remember, it was a single download.
