...you can gain back a lot of HD space by running the following at the command prompt (need to run command prompt as administrator by right clicking and choosing that option when you execute command prompt): C:\Windows\System32\DISM /online /Cleanup-Image /SpSuperseded

I got this tip from my Window's Secrets newsletter email. It saved around 5Gigs of harddrive space for me; not too shabby. Figured it's been over a year since I upgraded to SP1 so why not. :)

Forgot to add that it took over 10 minutes on my PC. Just wait until the operation is 100% complete before ending command prompt. :)

No need to PM you Zward117; the link to the particular part of the letter is below. I use to subscribe the the Langalist newsletter since 1998; Fred since joined forces with Windows Secrets and I decided to do a lifetime subscription since they've always giving me good info (past 5 or 6 years that is). The info from the newsletter is what I posted earlier. :)

Only the ones associated with Win7 OS prior to Win7 sp1 Rod. This folder is only good for quick recovery if you need to go back to a state prior to sp1 when you do this. Don't blindly delete any of the files in this folder of course; that's why I used the command line to do it. Don't think you can anyway since the folder is a Windows protected one. :)

Yeah; XP actually allows you to directly delete content in WinSxS directly which is very dangerous. You can safely delete most OS update uninstall folders ($NUninstallk***** folders) but if you do so, you won't be able to remove those particular updates. I always delete the last month's updates once I install the current month's updates to save HD space Rod. Figure if my OS is working fine, then why do I care if I can uninstall these updates. lol

In Linux we don't suffer from this kind of problem, you never have to defrag your disks for instance.
And if we did there would be oodles of articles, forums with free solutions.
Reminds me of the DOS era where technical writers wrote large books about "hidden" stuff in DOS.
Not for free of course.
Gerard.

I'm sure if you are willing to dig, you would find the same info Gerard. I only linked it since it was requested. I'm a PC guy so I do subscribe to both free and not free newsletters that are PC related. PCs are going to be a dieing breed once the smart phones and pads become the mainstream; that, I do believe. Still, I don't mind paying for content if it's important to me, but do agree that free is better. lol

I did refuse to believe that PCs would die too, but then, when I wanted Perculator and asked the creator to port it to Windows (it's and iPod and iPad app), he said he was thinking about doing so for Mac maybe but would do so for PCs. That's when I realized that PCs is a dieing breed. lol

Linux is not as vulnerable as most other OS's.
But it is possible.
Install "chkrootkit" and run it in a terminal like so:
sudo chkrootkit | less

Less is needed to show the output page by page.
It is not an antivirus program,it just shows infections.
Gerard.
