What i find most worrying about that is that FBI has the "authority" to arrest citizens of Estonia... extradition to USA should be stopped, they have no right to apply their laws to other countries.

I'm not worried about malware though - I use Linux.

so how do we even know that the links people put up to 'check your computer' to see if it's infected, aren't themselves a method used to plant a virus in our computer...just sayin....

Good point. I trust very little on the net.

I'll get back to you on the 10th. There is something every day that threatens to end the world, internet, social security, oil supply, or (and this is really scary) the world's supply of whipped cream. A few years back a well known expert named Iben Browning predicted that there would be a massive earthquake that would destroy the midwest. A lot of people bought into it. The day came and went, just like every day. In 1999 everybody was up in arms over the 2k thing and panicked because it was going to be a disaster. The day came and went.

I can handle all of it except for the lack of whipped cream, I must have my cool whip to survive.

I did say it was serious. Sorry if it induced a panic attack.

I'm not really concerned; I virtuallize. I've seen way too many malware on customer's machines when I was in the PC repair business and I said to myself, self, there needs to be a solution. Well, I found that there is only one (and I mean one) solution and it isn't an anti-virus/malmare program. It does require a firewall of course, but the only solution is sandboxing your browsing (a form of virtualization) but I go one step further and, in essence, am double sandboxed. I have seen drive by attacks and I laugh at them. How's that for confidence in this solution. I won't be so pompous as to believe this solution is perfect, but I will say I'm better protected then any Linux or MAC OS ever will be since it requires me to be stupid and not an external group to be smart against me. Only vulnerability I see is for me to share too much info with the masses so I try to be careful (paranoid), but even Andy Grove finally wasn't paranoid enough.

And you ninja'ed me Erisian. :ninja

I dunno, I think Linux is secure enough if you don't do anything stupid like give permissions to unknown software. When you also browse with noscript + adblock, there's practically no way for malware to get in.

Besides, that kind of virtualization schemes come with a cost of increased resource usage - which I guess is fine if you have the hardware to support it... I'd rather just use an OS that is reasonably secure but also doesn't take up too much resources.

For my XP VM itself, I notice 0 issues with speed (MB supports Virtualization acceleration) dd. I do notice a little delay when I launch IE via Sandboxie itself though, but that afterward, no issue either (note if I just launch IE without SBIE, it launches near instantaneously as would be expected). Trust me when I tell you my setup is more secure then Linux and of course Vista/Win7 too; just is. If you double-sandbox then you would be as secure as me. lol

I know modern browsers support sandbox like ability but it's not the same as Sandboxie. Since I also run Sandboxie in a VM, it's like near fire proof. Every so often I hose the whole VM to a rock solid set point and continue from there so no mal-ware, even if Sandboxed, will last long. I do also use Open DNS and do run a rudimentary anti-trojan (because I am on the paranoid side) so I'm not cavelier enough to say my setup is perfect, but again, I am cavelier enough to say it's superior to any other security means, but I've been accused of being overly protective (other forum then here) but I retort that at least I'm 100% immune to drivebys and there is no other way to be so then virtualization. Proselytize I do, but trust me when I tell you that you are not protected (even with Linux) to all driveby situations and that's the reason why you have a false sense of security if you don't Virtualize. There's some programs that literal virtualize the whole OS in real mode (Deep Freeze for instance; when I was working for my last job, I had to service PCs that we built for the local schools and they used this cool software; a lot of libraries do too and this program is very effective and the inspiration which led to my VM crusade.). :)

Seems like a load of "bollocks" to me. I am definitely not going to click on any site that asks me to see if my computer is infected. That is like clicking on "Please let us clean up your registry" from a site that is from Russia or Nigeria. I have not seen any articles about this by AVG, Norton, Kasperski and all the other Anti-Virus giants?

I first heard about it on the radio news.
Before posting about it here, I googled it and found it to be legit. Thanks shoebutton for other links. :bigthup

I am going to sit here and do nothing until July 10th. If my internet goes down i will go fishing. :lol
All i use internet for is my graphics design biz/hobby, and bill paying through my bank anyways. And i can do that at the library...providing they don't get hit. But they probably have Deep Freeze installed. :)

Personally i think we all need to get back to getting used to the basics, including no electricity.
Something far worse is probably coming other than internet connection loss.I don't think the world is going to end on Dec. 21'st either. In fact i have my neighborhood hall reserved for the Saturday before Christmas on the 22'nd. :)
I think a lot of people who spent millions of dollars on a condo/bunker in a missile silo will be unhappy but that's just my opinion.

Yeah; heard that it will affect certain (but not most) machines. Not really worried. I use Open DNS anyway, so that should completely bypass this particular exploit anyway. :)

Are you guys talking about the solar maximum or something?

That's the only conceivable thing that I can see killing our electricity (unless the oil runs out...) - and it's coming this year. But it's not certain by any means - it's just that some scientists say there is a slight possibility this year's soar maximum will be of such intensity that it will disable all eletrical appliances in the world.

Personally I think it's unlikely, but you never know...

What am I not protected against?
