Yes Rod, I had to go with an animated brush I made. I will share it as well.
Incidentally, I also wrote a python script for animated brush creation (duplicate layers with transform) as the one I got - script-fu, has a limit of 36 cells (10 degree increments). My script can go up to 100 (Gimp's limit).
Will polish it off a bit, then add to uploads as well.

There is another great tool out there named Clone Layer Tool.

As I recall, this plugin doesn't actually draw anything on a layer Gram. It creates vector paths so you need to see the result by opening your paths dialog window. You can stroke the path to see the result too of course.
