I bought the Gimp Bible some time ago because I want to really become proficient in Gimp.
To my surprise a lot of things in the book were completely different from Gimp-2.6.11.
Then rereading the introduction I discovered why:
The book was written using Gimp-2.7.
Now from a standpoint of writing a textbook that will not soon become obsolete I understand.
Problem only is that 2.7 is not yet recommended for production work.
Which to me meant that if I installed 2.7.1 I risked having a buggy Gimp.

The solution was to install a new instance of Gentoo Linux on a spare harddrive.
Once installed I d/led 2.7.1 and installed it too.
It's too early to tell for sure but it seems to work ok.
I have lots of time so that's no problem.

The book is very well written,has a good index so finding things is quick and easy.
Once I am satisfied that it does all the things I want to do I will replace 2.6.11 on my regular install.
I hope this info might be of value to someone considering buying this book.

Well 2.7.1 is buggy!
Crashed because of gegl.
And even the book was of no help when I tried to make curved text.
I finally succeeded but forgot what I did (quite complicated).
You live and learn.

2.6.10 imo is the most stable version of GIMP. 2.6.11 has issues with PSPI (for certain PS filters). Text along a path isn't hard to do, but Inkscape does a cleaner job of it. Still, I did use GIMP for this one.

Thanks for the reply.
Well I installed it right after it came out.
It's supposed to be a bugs only upgrade of 2.6.10.
I haven't tried PSPI filters yet so I wouldn't know.
Anyway downgrading to 2.6.10 is so easy in Gentoo.

What I miss here is the OS a person uses to run Gimp.
From experience with my brother in law I know that Gimp in Windows is more trouble.
Also is the latest "gutenprint" available for Windows?
It's much better than the Win drivers that come with a lot of printers.
I might install inkscape and see what it can do although curved text is not that important to me.

I actually use GIMP for Windows (32-bit version even though I have Win7 64-bit because of PSPI; can't work without my PS filters). GIMP for Windows isn't all that bad by the way. Still treated like a red headed step child sometimes though. 2.6.10 has been quite stable for me. Hope they get the PSPI issues resolved, but they don't really have too since PSPI is not an officially sanctioned GIMP plugin.

Update:
I installed gimp-2.7.2 and gegl and babl-0.1.3.
It froze using gegl operations.
I then downgraded gegl and babl to 0.1.2.
Now there are only one or two gegl operations that make it freeze.
I tried a lot of other things but it held up ok.
But in the .xsession-errors file there was something about leaks.
Those errors texts are for the developers I guess.
This must be memory leaks caused by faults in the program.
So I will wait some more before installing it in my regular Gentoo.
In the meantime I can use it to work with this Bible.
