After seeing a question on another forum about vexel (pixel and vector) art in Gimp, i decided to start one. This isn't finished yet, but the layer groups in 2.7 were very handy for this, as there are many layers for one object.

What you do is open an image you want to vexel
Duplicate the image
Go to Colors/Posterize on the duplicate layer
go to colors/colorize, and lower the saturation until the image is black and white on the duplicate layer
Now just add another transparent layer.
Now make the original layer invisible.
Then just create paths around each color and right click/ path to election each path
Then make the original visible again and using the color picker pick the color of the selection you are doing.
This way you get the original pixel colors.
Now select the new transparent layer and Edit/fill with foreground color
Keep doing this until you have used all the posterized color secrions in your image.
And that's pretty much it.

Have fun vexeling

Here is the same image partially vexeled and using the shadow from the original image.
