I am on version 2.8 of gimp. I am also on my cell phone aat the moment so i cant see all the other options i am supposed to select before posting.

I posted a qurstion in the inkscape forums about using jpgs in inkscape, especially large sized ones from a point and shoot cannon camera or phone. In inkscape if ypu manually resize the image with arrows or typing it in, it still keeps same ppi so inkscape slows way down.

If i were to resize the image from3750 wide and like1700 high, to lets say 800 by 600, would gimp automataclly change the ppi as well or is that somethimg else i uabe to do?. Thanks

Inkscape is vector graphics so its usage of PPI is very different. Given a PPI and a physical size, it can generate any image.

Gimp is a bitmap editor, it only cares about pixels. The size in pixels of the image cannot be changed lightly because it will usually introduce some degradation (of course, you can do it, but it's not necessary for printing). Gimp will let your specify a print size or a print definition (but not both, since that would imply a change in the size in pixels).

Here is what they told me on the inkscape forums:

Just scaling a bitmap in Inkscape by dragging the selection arrows or typing into the Width and Height boxes won't actually reduce the number of pixels in the image, so will have little or no effect on the rendering speed.

1) Resize the image in The GIMP or some other bitmap editor

The above is what i was told to do. I assume that resizing in gimp or a bitmap editor chages how many pixles there are? Or am i miss understanding the inkscape forums?

Thanks

Your understanding is correct.

Nevertheless, I would point out that in GIMP parlance there is a distinction made between "scaling" and "resizing". When you alter the size of the graphical content, it is called "scaling". When you change the dimensions of the image or layer, but the graphical content stays the same size, it is called "resizing".

It will be easier to follow GIMP documentation, tutorials, and the menu commands if you keep this terminology in mind.

ok, so if i have a giant picture, as in dimensions are 17 inches by 10 inches, what option do i need to do to make a picture in inkscape not slow it down? resizing physically changes the picture and allows the pixles to adjust to the changing dimms right? IE, i change the dimms and the amount of pixles should change per area as well?

thanks

Pixles will remain the same, unless the properties of the image is changed before scaling. Even still the pixles will remain the same for any scaled down image. Only that the pixles redistributed to fit the image scale.
PPi is most important when an image is going to be printed, the more the better.

Open your JPG in Inkscape, save as SVG and you should be good to go.

so saving it as a svg after scaling it in inkscape should not slow inkscape down anymore? because the jpg sure slows inkscape down. haha

thanks

In my directions to use SVG there is no mention of resizing BEFORE saving as SVG. You want to resize the vector file not the JPG file. JPGs are lossy and degrade, SVG not so much. Save to Inkscape's native format SVG before you manipulate the JPG, just like in Gimp when you would use XCF. :)

Oh ok cool. I see what you mean. Open, save and then resize. The thing i have noticed doing this though is that it is still a jpg image embeded in a svg. It doesnt convert the image to vector. It still reads it as a bitmap/raster image.
Thanks my friends for the.help

SVG is basically an XML document, although it's considered a vector format it can contain raster and vector.
