Notepad ++ is very good at what it does.
Next have a look at RJ TextEd, it has more web development options.

Notepad++ isn't a "web development tool", it's a very good general-purpose editor with enough bells and whistles to make it good at web development

I agree that notepad++ is an excellent tool: just today I discovered a nice batch-like feature: I wanted to modify the menu on all the downloaded scripts; well, it was a matter of seconds:
1-select all scripts
2-open (all) in notepad++
3-prepare a find-replace (old>new menu) on one of them
4-hit on "apply to all opened files"
5-choose File>Save all
that's it! excellent

I think Notepad++ is about as good as it gets. I used it all the time when I was in Windows.

I've been using Pluma in MATE for basic code & text editing. It has several nice themes and does of good job of color highlighting code. The Tango theme is easy on my eyes.

If I were to get involved with a big project project, where I needed to frequently compile and link, I'd believe I''d probably go with Geany.

Anyone remember SPF and its various flavors? I loved that editor. It was the cat's meow, back in the day.

I used to use Emacs for many years until I started to feel the strain in my hand; these days I use VIM for all my coding work.
I'm very rarely doing any serious text work on Windows but I do remember Notepad++ being quite okay - works as expected without many bells and whistles.
