Esper would you be able to share your secret on how you filled the text with the sparks brush so evenly
i didnt use the sparks-brush, graechan

I used the Pack Shape filter but that didnt give me good results with the sparks
so i did it with ordinary brush dots instead

the inspiration came actually from that time when i used to re-create record covers, and 'Moving Shadow' had the moving shadow man made from bubbles

Image

i tried to do it manually first, then in Inkscape, because that would let me move around the individual shapes more easily
but im neither patient nor talented enough for such stuff and didnt know if there is a filter that could do the same thing in IS until i remembered that David just wrote such a filter, lol

I was thinking about writing a tutorial, but tbh, this is very much EK's technique and i dont want to rewrite everything he already showed

the bubbles were done with bump-mapping and then Colour to Alpha, just as EK did
i guess you could get the same results with Lighting Effects or layerfx, just make sure the light is coming from above (90° Angle)

i used a few tricks to get a different distribution of the bubbles, because unfortunately right now, David's script fills everything with big bubbles first, as you can see in my first attempt and i didnt like that
there is already a request for more modifications, so maybe the Pack Shape Filter will soon be improved ?

well he said his tuts are open source, so i guess it would be okay
i need to redo the effect before i can write a tutorial, and i found a few ways to improve it
but im not feeling well at the moment, maybe tonight after i come back from work

it would be cool if people could experiment and come up with their own way of recreating what i did, because that helps finding different ways of achieving the effect

Hey, you guys got some nice results.

Esper I don't mind if you modify my tutorials, they are meant to inspire further study and refining of techniques. I only show what I know, if you all got something to add to improve it, go for it. I think it'd be wrong of me to get all elbows about something meant for a freely shared program like GIMP. It's like saying you can't have any free cake, what country is this anyways... So in short. Have at it.

here is a mini tutorial:

01. type text, preferably a rounded font
02. alpha select and save to a channel
03. create a mask for the Pack Filter (from a layer in any colour, delete the basetext selection)
04. fill mask with a few big bubbles (i used a 44 brush)
05. create transparent layer and paint one smaller bubble for the Pack Filter (i used a 25 brush)
06. apply Pack Filter at default values, except for minimal scale: 30
07. call up selection from saved channel, invert and delete from Pack Filter result
08. alpha select your bubbles, fill with a 50 medium grey
09. save selection to a channel
10. blur channel by 5
11. bump map bubbles -> Azimuth: 90; Angle: 20; Depth: 4; Ambient: 65
12. Colour to Alpha bump mapped bubbles with the medium grey
13. duplicate, apply Colour to Alpha with black and white, so you end up with a layer with a shadow and a layer with a highlight as in EK's tut
14. duplicate highlight, blur by 3 and tighten with alpha curve for a shiny light
15. set mode of shadow to Grain Merge, duplicate and invert colour,so that you end up with a white and a black shadow, reduce opacity, until it glows (as in EK's tut)
16. apply dropshadow with layer knocking out shadow, so its empty inside

Its actually just a simple bevel with a dropshadow
in terms of texteffects, thats very minimalistic

its just very effective because of the Pack Filter and the underwater context
