I read it and I even tried it. It doesn't work and would make the situation like 10 times worse. The now detached function/box disappears to the back of the main GIMP window, just the same as if all of the functions (layers/paths/channels/fonts/brushes/etc.) were kept together. I don't understand the practicality of this suggestion, in any event. What am I supposed to do (assuming your suggestion even works, which it doesn't) -- separate out all of the tabs and have like 10 different dialog boxes all over the GIMP window?

But thanks for the recommendation anyways. It was much appreciated. The sarcasm, not so much.

I think PixLab is showing a Linux solution. There is a Windows Utility to pin individual windows.

Looks like a real mess, my advice is go back to the default single window and start again.
In Gimp Edit -> Preferences -> Interface -> Window Management and click on Reset Saved Window Positions to Default Values Edit: You wrote earlier that this does not work. Try again it does work. Restart Gimp and if you want to go into multi-window mode, go do it, or detach docks, Set up Gimp the way you want. By default the last settings are saved.

Note, same place Edit -> Preferences -> Interface -> Window Management is a tick box for Save window positions on exit which is the cause of your woes. Untick that and then Save Window Positions Now then whenever you start Gimp the windows return to the saved position(s).

It might not be necessary if you want a maximised Gimp. Keep with single window mode. F11 toggles full screen and TAB toggles the docks on/off.

Yeah, that Pixlab suggestion doesn't work either. This is a GIMP problem, not a Windows problem.

Looks to me that your canvas window just needs to be made smaller - click on the box top right and minimise it.

This also doesn't work. And I don't k now why my main GIMP window or canvas needs to be made smaller. The dialgog boxes should be above or over the GIMP window no matter how big or small the canvas is. I've been using GIMP for almost 10 years and I've never used single window mode. And I've been able to size and resize any and all of the windows to whatever size I felt like using, whether the main GIMP widow (canvas) or any of the dialog boxes. I've never had this problem. Apparently, no one else has either.

Yeah, What you really mean is you can not get it to work. It is not a Gimp problem.

Get a yourself a new user profile. Delete the folder C:\Users\"yourname"\AppData\Roaming\GIMP\2.10\
and start again from fresh.

Since you have been using Gimp for 10 years, if you have a Gimp 2.8 profile C:\Users\"yourname"\.gimp-2.8 delete that as well to prevent Gimp 2.10 migrating a load of out-of-date settings.

Thanks. But I bought a new laptop a week or so ago. So when I loaded GIMP, there were no old GIMP files. Also, in trying to solve this problem, I've uninstalled and then reinstalled GIMP at least three times. Same problem. I've also tried that recommendation to go into Edit ---> Preferences and reset to default values. That didn't work. And besides, when I do a total uninstall and reinstall of GIMP, I should be starting off at default values, anyway. And, when I reinstalled, I even chose older versions of GIMP, hoping that would do the trick. That didn't work either.

Finally, what do you mean by "I can't get it to work?" Why shouldn't it work properly right out of the box? Why should I have to get it to do anything? I'm confused because your sentence suggests that I'm doing something wrong when I don't think I should have to do anything for the program to do what it's supposed to do.

You gave me an idea, though. Maybe, these recent uninstalls weren't clean. I'll check and see if there are still any GIMP files on my computer and if there are, I'll manually delete them after another unsintall. Then I'll re-install yet again.

FIXED!!!!

I uninstalled and then reinstalled GIMP once again. Only this time, after uninstalling, I manually looked for any remaining or leftover GIMP files on my hard drive that the uninstall didn't catch. Then I manually removed all of those files.

While GIMP was reinstalling again, I had a feeling it would work this time because this reinstall took a few minutes to load while the other reinstalls took less than a minute.

Thanks to all for your suggestions. Much appreciated. I'm glad that's over even though I'll never quite know what was causing that glitch.
